Clothes Vocabulary
6I love to let students be in charge of finding their own vocabulary words! I find the are more likely to remember them when they discover them on their own. Sometimes, this is hard to do. Many students look up the wrong word in the dictionary or use a translator incorrectly. However, if they get the vocabulary from an authentic source then the words are usually used in context and many times include a picture.
For a clothing/shopping unit there are tons of sources that students can use to figure out new words! Mine all found the main clothes items from the El Corte Ingles website. The next day they found around 10 clothing accessories from the People en Espanol magazines (which is also online) that I have in the room. ZARA - Espana is another great online shopping experience. All I had to do is give them a “list” with basic pictures of the different clothing items/accessories and they created their own vocab lists!
Here are a few glances at the authentic resources my students had their hands on…
In the end, they found their new vocab (without a dictionary or translator) with a big dose of culture. They were asking tons of questions about what they saw! Success!
What other great resources can students use to find their own vocabulary instead of just getting a list in class?

So sad, planned a unit starter just like this, got the kids to the lab….it was blocked. I was so unprepared for not being able to do the activity! Thing I learned, check to see if any websites I need are blocked way ahead of time!!!!
Im so sorry to hear that! How frustrating! I wonder why that’s blocked!! You should email your schools tech people and get them to open it up for you! Did you try Zara.es?
I emailed them to open it, but who knows when that will happen! I’ll try zara.es tomorrow. I learned that what works on my computer might not work in the computer lab! I’m going to make a list this summer of every site that I want to use so they can open them for me! Anyhow, they were super excited to do this activity, thanks to you all, it’ll happen eventually!
I just remembered this link now and you’re beyond your clothes unit but it’s a blog that a Spanish friend of a friend writes! All focused on fashion trends en españa! http://renovarseomorir-jana.blogspot.com/
thanks Nickithompson, I´ll try to writte all my post in english too.
Nice site! I love that it is in all Spanish. I’ll definitely use this with my students because it’s authentic and fresh.
