Here are a few videos to get students excited about taking world languages! Hopefully you will enjoy a few laughs with them too.

It’s important to take world languages, especially for college.

A mixture of celebrities talking in different languages.

Cute!

Where’s Matt? I love all the places he travels.

Great for French classes!

The EF channel on YouTube has several videos for different countries.

I like these two videos: the first is Gwyneth Paltrow being interviewed in Spanish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynf-3HIVCYE and the second is an interview (and song) with Will Smith and Jackie Chan:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ni3uBi4DG8

I found this link to CALL ME MAYBE in Spanish – I really like this Danny Torres – he has a nice voice.

What a coincidence! I found this one today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT53vcS6DzA&feature=youtube_gdata_player I played it while they practiced “I can say my phone number.”

      • Tammy says:

Ok, I have to ask a “dumb” question? Is there something special/different about saying your phone number in Spanish (vs English), other than saying the numbers?

Also, do you show the video first and then have students just say their number orally?

        • Kara says:

I don’t think so… Any native speakers have input on this?
First we had input: I said the numbers/they wrote down on white boards. I played the song in the background while they played the “Numbers Spanish” app where they practiced listening and reading numbers. Then they walked around to ask/answer “what’s your number?”. Last year, they made some pick-up line skits where they said “I lost my number, can I have yours?”

          • What is the numbers app? We are learning numbers on Thursday, so any input would be great!

Search “Spanish numbers” in the app store. It’s the first one (Spain flag colors with a number 1). The free version does 0-42, has two dialects (Americas and Spain) and has a read, listen and write function. The paid goes to a million. I tell them to start in reading, when they get 10 in a row correct, they move to the next mode. Here are 2 other apps in checking out now: Memrise and tiny tap. (thanks to Josh!)

    Use celebrities to teach:
Quién es él /ella and to teach that all hispanics are not Mexican.
Also a good lead in to mapping countries where Spanish is spoken and selecting
    student country/names.
Here is a link to a powerpoint you can use:

Here’s one – Glee with Ricky Martin singing a Spanglish version of Sexy and I Know It. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4IZQeIrWNI

A remix of a scene from the Pixar movie Up where the little boy scout knocks on the door..

Uses a lot of greeting vocabulary :)

  6. Have any French stuff?
