Chalkboard Paint

I recently stumbled across chalkboard paint as I was roaming around Lowe’s and decided to use it this year in my classroom. I love that the black stands out from the white walls and white paper I normally use! I set up stations a lot with my students and have been wanting a more permanent way to let kids know what they will be doing at that station. So I painted a little around the room, walls, tables, and more. Here’s how it turned out…

(excuse the sloppy handwriting!)
I plan on putting new words and phrases on the strip each week to help while they complete each task. At this speaking station I will put up phrases like… “What do you think?” or “In my opinion” to help them keep their conversations alive. The beautiful thing is that I don’t have to type, print, or tape up the words. All I have to do is erase it and rewrite.
I also painted an old picture and I’ll use it as an instruction board at one of my stations. Here’s it is…

Chalkboards may be old school but this paint is exactly what I’ve been looking for!

What about you? Anyone use chalkboard paint in their classroom? I would love to hear some suggestions!

P.S. I LOVE seeing all the pictures of bulletin boards that have been emailed in! Keep them coming! I can’t wait to share them with everyone :)

i’ve been wanting to get some magnetic paint to have an area to play some games. (think matching up verb stems and endings, etc.) still waiting on permission… :/ i would love to hear more about your stations or centers. i’ve only seen this used in elementary classes. how do you make them work?

definitely want to hear more about stations!!

  3. You could also use blackboard contact paper (at Home Depot or Lowe’s) to keep those pesky administrators off your back if they won’t let you paint :)

You guys should DEFINITELY check out Idea Paint: http://www.ideapaint.com/
I find it cleaner and easier to read than chalk. I’ve painted desks/doors/and full walls and cut down a ton on my paper use.

It dries as a white board and I find it much cleaner and easier to use than chalk. I’ve painted desks, walls, and doors in an effort to cut down on paper use.

  6. I love the chalkboard paint on the walls! What a great way to add more Spanish space :) Especially on those brick walls that are impossible to tape stuff onto- I have those too. I don’t know if they’ll give me permission though- sigh… and I’m not too fond of chalk either- I’ll have to look into that white board paint that sounds fabulous.

  7. I’ve got some leftover chalkboard paint from a home project (we revamped an old desk with a new coat of stain & a chalkboard top surface) and I’m dying to find a sturdy second-hand bookshelf to paint at least one side of it with. I also bought white board contact paper which I hope to incorporate in some way.

  8. I love the blackboard paint on the wall. I’m not sure if my pre-school will allow me to do that, but I did convince them to allow me to paint our school furniture with blackboard paint. Our kids can now use their desks and chairs to draw on with chalk! We’ve been having a blast with it. My only issue is that it is a bit of a hassle to clean each day, and the room gets a bit dusty from the chalk. Also, thanks to those who suggested blackboard contact paper and whiteboard paint. I’m going to check them out.
